1. X.400 project

Paul Bryant presented the project; the plan is submitted to IBM to supply as agreed the SERIE 1 and travel expenses to the countries involved:

Italy which is carrying out the same project with a different technical approach not involving the SERIE 1, is considered as taking part to the experimentation.

A training meeting lasting one week will take place soon in Heidelberg.

2. Membership criteria

A discussion is carried on to define membership categories. The following categories definition is discussed.

Full members
A. universities and higher education institutes;
B. national and international governmental research institutions closely associated with universities and higher education institutions;
C. national and international governmental research institutions not closely associated with universities and higher education institutions;
D. high school;
Associate members
E. independent non-profit research organizations;
F. research unit in non-research government organizations;
G. independent agencies financing research projects in categories (A) or (B);
H. major research centers of commercial organizations which are involved in activities with categories (A) or (B).

For associate members applications must be sponsored by any full members.

Action Ex BoD 1.2.1: D. Lord presents the subject to the next BoD meeting for approval.

4. New countries join EARN

A. Auroux explains the situation of a number of countries willing to join EARN or in the process of being connected.

In the latter category are:

In the former category are Egypt, Gulfnet countries and some eastern countries.

Action Ex BoD 1.4.1: Any country willing to join the network should send the request to the EARN President for the examination by the BoD.

5. Relations with RARE organization

Action Ex BoD 1.5.1: D. Lord sends a letter to P. Linington, President of RARE, to invite him to attend the next BoD meeting to discuss EARN future plans and to compare EARN and RARE objectives.

Action Ex BoD 1.5.2: D. Lord meets EC and EUREKA representatives in order to explain them future plans of EARN.
