The slide and font generation program described in SPROGS Paper No 17 has been modified in response to users' requests. The changes are minor and are connected only with the slide definition part.
The format of the display in the third overlay, DF FRAME, has been altered. Three additional quantities are displayed :-
(a) SIZE Next to the SIZE light button is printed the size of the currently selected item. The user does not therefore need to remember the current sizes of items.
(b) DOWN, RIGHT The current settings of the Y-INCREMENT and X-INCREMENT values are displayed next to DOWN and RIGHT respectively.
A number of users have experienced difficulties when the IN FRAME light button has been hit by mistake. This will, of course, force a new frame into core, losing the old frame. If the light button has been hit in error, typing a zero frame number will cause the system to resume with the current page.
As originally set up, the system updated the complete frame whenever a change had been made to it other than a positional one. For complex frames, this can be quite tedious. Two changes have been made to improve the system. The frame generation code has been improved to speed up the updating. Also, if changes are made to the last item defined, only the last item gets updated. As long as a user can define size and content of each item as he inputs it, this should allow a more efficient mode of operation.
The abutting of 35mm frames on the SD4020 is sufficiently good now to allow low quality slides to be produced in this way. Suggested size for main titles is 16 and normal text is 12 although it is probably readable in a small room down to a size of 8.
It appears that the SD4020 is unable to abut 35 mm frames exactly. The manufacturer's specifications are such that we already have the machine well within these. Consequently, it is unlikely that high quality slides will ever be possible on the SD4020. Slides generated at the moment show slight discontinuities which are only just visible at a distance.
Chain 3 now requires two additional routines, DECODE and UPITEM, to be compiled.
