Chapter 1: Invited and submitted papers plus notes of discussions

Introduction

One of the reasons for the success of the Seillac Workshop can definitely be attributed to the prior commitment that the participants achieved before their arrival at Seillac. All the participants had some part in establishing the background and atmosphere and everyone arrived with a sense of involvement for the Workshop already created. Position papers had been written, distributed and discussed even before the official opening of the Workshop, thereby contributing greatly to the speed at which the preliminaries were accomplished, and the sub-groups had settled down to serious discussion.

Most of the position papers cover several subjects connected with Methodology in Computer Graphics and there is of course a great deal of overlap between the papers. In selecting papers, it is always difficult to make a choice, which is not obvious to everyone. We have tried to retain those papers that we felt could be grouped together to provide a logical progression through the background material. It is only fair to mention that all participants contributed to the understanding of the issues and that the notes of the discussion periods are edited with the intent of conveying the meaning rather than the source. The work should be considered as a collective scientific exercise.
